British independent masters

George Daniels &
Roger W. Smith.

Not tool divers — but essential context for anyone serious about mechanical watchmaking. Their work is part of the small-production, hand-finished British horology tradition.

1926–2011

George Daniels

English horologist, author and inventor of the co-axial escapement — known for developing the co-axial escapement, which was later adopted by Omega. He hand-built a small number of complete watches (pocket and wrist), each requiring thousands of hours, and became an important figure in modern independent watchmaking.

  • Invented the co-axial escapement (later adopted by Omega and still used in Seamaster and other Omega divers).
  • Mastered every craft needed to make a watch from raw materials — the “Daniels Method”.
  • He produced a relatively small number of complete watches during his lifetime; individual auction results vary by watch and provenance.
  • He was not a dive-watch maker, but his escapement was later adopted by Omega for use in a range of watches, including dive-watch models.

When you look at an Omega Seamaster with a co-axial movement, you are looking at Daniels’ engineering legacy under water.

Isle of Man

Roger W. Smith

Daniels’ former apprentice and an independent watchmaker working from the Isle of Man. Working from the Isle of Man, Smith produces a tiny number of fully hand-made watches each year. Availability and secondary-market prices vary considerably by watch, provenance and market conditions.

  • Series watches (Series 1 through Series 6 and beyond) refine classical English finishing and the single-wheel co-axial escapement.
  • The workshop is known for extensive in-house hand-finishing and manufacture; exact production methods vary by component and model.
  • Prices vary substantially by model, commission and secondary-market conditions; check current sources for any particular watch.
  • Water resistance exists on some models (historically noted around 50 m / 160 ft) but these are not tool divers and are not intended for serious underwater use.

Smith’s work is focused on small-production, hand-finished mechanical watches rather than tool divers.

Daniels and Smith sit outside the usual dive-watch spectrum. They are included here because the co-axial escapement links Daniels directly to modern high-end divers, and because any serious conversation about mechanical excellence eventually reaches the Isle of Man workshop.

A 200m rating does not mean a watch should be taken to 200m by a recreational diver. Water-resistance figures are laboratory ratings, and seals age. For actual diving, follow the manufacturer's instructions and have the watch tested when appropriate.
Buyer's guide

What should you
actually look for?

Start with the job the watch needs to do. Then consider the details that affect ownership.

01 / WATER

Water resistance

Check the manufacturer's stated rating and intended use. Look for a screw-down crown and serviceable seals on watches intended for serious water activity.

02 / BEZEL

Unidirectional bezel

A proper dive bezel is designed so accidental movement reduces the indicated remaining time rather than increasing it.

03 / LEGIBILITY

Lume & contrast

Large hands, clear markers and effective luminous material are practical features, especially as ambient light falls underwater.

04 / CRYSTAL

Sapphire or mineral?

Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant. Mineral crystal can still be perfectly serviceable and often helps keep a budget watch affordable.

Tip: don't buy a watch purely because it says “diver” on the dial. Compare the exact reference, movement, water rating, bezel, crown, crystal and manufacturer's intended use.

Frequently asked questions about dive watches

What makes a true dive watch?

For a watch marketed as a dive watch, check the manufacturer’s stated specifications and, where relevant, the ISO 6425 standard. Useful features can include a suitable water-resistance rating, unidirectional bezel, legible dial, luminous markings and secure strap or bracelet. A screw-down crown is common on many serious dive watches but is not, by itself, proof of dive-watch compliance.

What should I consider under £100?

The Casio Duro (MDV-106) is a budget dive-watch-style quartz model to consider under £100. The referenced model is stated as water-resistant to 200m and has a screw-down crown; check the exact reference and current listing before purchase.

Rolex Submariner vs Omega Seamaster?

Both ranges include 300m-rated models. The exact specifications differ by reference; compare movement certification, materials, dimensions, bracelet and price for the particular models you are considering.

Do I need a dive watch if I don't dive?

No. Dive watches can also be worn as everyday sports watches. Water resistance and construction should be matched to the activities you intend to undertake — but a lower rating is fine if you never go underwater.
